Patti Payne crafts a musical world where intimacy, sophistication and imagination meet in effortless harmony
Patti Payne
Pianist, vocalist, composer and arranger, Patti Payne blends jazz and Bossa nova influences with her own expressive sensibility, creating music that feels deeply personal and richly textural.
Patti began her Jazz career in Montreal, and is now based in Hamilton. In the spring of 2023, Patti founded the Patti Payne Trio, a project that quickly drew attention for its exquisite, unexpected arrangements and its unmistakable sense of intimacy. Her sultry vocal tone, multilingual lyricism and instinct for emotional narrative allow her to move fluidly between languages and musical colours, weaving them as seamlessly as notes in a score. Listeners have described her music as “sheer truth and feeling — dark, shaded and radiant all together.”
As an arranger, Patti brings a fresh and exploratory approach to contemporary jazz and Bossa nova traditions. Her work draws out subtle harmonic detail and expressive nuance, inviting listeners into a space that feels both honest and transporting.
Patti holds a BMus from Queen’s University and a BFA Specialization in Jazz Studies from Concordia University, where she studied arranging under celebrated jazz historian and Grammy nominee Andrew Homzy. She has performed at notable venues and festivals including The Jazz Room in Waterloo, The Waterloo Jazz Festival, The Gasworks Concert Hall in Hamilton, and with the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, where she both opened and performed as a guest artist.
Her debut album, You Give Me Fever, marks an exciting new chapter in her evolving artistry, and features the core trio of Patti Payne, guitarist Ralf Buschmeyer, and bassist Ian Whitman. Beyond her trio work, Patti has collaborated with an impressive roster of musicians including: Clark Johnston, Miles Kosaleci-Vieira, Eric Lundgren, Jack McFadden, Paul Novotny, Tony Vieira and Ted Warren. With each new project, she continues to expand her expressive range and refine a sound that is distinctive, fearless and unmistakably her own.
